China Jails Tibetan Activist for Exposing Environmental Destruction by Construction Giant

In yet another display of authoritarian control and disregard for the environment, China has sentenced 29-year-old Tibetan activist Tsongon Tsering to eight months in prison. His crime? Courageously exposing the illegal and environmentally devastating sand-mining activities of a Chinese construction giant in his village of Tsaruma, located in Khyungchu County (also known as Hongyuan County), Sichuan Province.

The Incident: Courage Against Exploitation

Tsongon Tsering took to the Kuaishou short video platform on October 15, sharing a five-minute message to reveal the illegal sand-mining operations of Anhui Xianhe Construction Engineering Company. The company’s actions, carried out in the Dangchu River-a vital waterway feeding into Asia’s major rivers, including the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers—have severely disrupted the environment and the livelihoods of local Tibetans.

Instead of addressing the grave ecological concerns, Chinese authorities responded with repression. On October 22, local police summoned several Tibetans who had supported Tsering’s protest. While most were released, Tsering was detained and later charged with “inciting public unrest out of personal hatred.”

A Sentence Shrouded in Intimidation

The Khyungchu County People’s Court sentenced Tsering to eight months in prison on October 27, 2024. However, it was made clear that the length of his sentence could change depending on his and his family’s “future behavior,” reflecting the ongoing coercive tactics often employed against Tibetan activists.

Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) has reported that the court sought to intimidate the local community by requiring attendees of the hearing to submit identification two to three days in advance. As a result, only a handful of individuals—despite widespread local support for Tsering—dared to be present.

A Double Standard: Light Fine for the Company

In a striking contrast, the Anhui Xianhe Construction Engineering Company, which was found guilty of illegal sand-mining, was let off with nothing more than a nominal fine. The company’s actions have reportedly caused irreversible environmental damage to the river ecosystem and the surrounding community.

This preferential treatment is emblematic of China’s dual oppression: suppressing Tibetan voices while enabling large corporations to plunder their land with impunity.

A Broader Pattern of Environmental Exploitation

The Dangchu River is not just a local water source; it is part of a larger network of rivers critical to the ecological health of Asia. By destroying these waterways, corporations, with the tacit approval of Chinese authorities, jeopardize regional ecosystems and the lives of millions who rely on these rivers.

Tsongon Tsering’s activism is part of a growing outcry from Tibetans who seek to protect their fragile environment from exploitation. Unfortunately, as his case demonstrates, such voices are often silenced with arrests and imprisonment under the guise of maintaining “social stability.”

Environmental Activism as Resistance

This incident sheds light on the environmental consequences of China’s development projects in Tibet, where natural resources are exploited to fuel broader ambitions, often at the expense of the indigenous population. The ecological degradation caused by sand mining is just one example of how Tibet’s environment and people are treated as expendable.

The Fight for Justice

Tsongon Tsering’s courage reflects the resilience of the Tibetan people, who continue to speak out against exploitation and injustice despite the risks. His case serves as a reminder of the urgent need for global attention and solidarity. The international community must hold China accountable for both environmental violations and human rights abuses.

Tibet Rights Collective calls on individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide to demand justice for Tsongon Tsering and to amplify the voices of those defending Tibet’s fragile ecosystems and cultural identity. Environmental devastation and the criminalization of dissent cannot go unnoticed.
